My reels do work!
Richard, one of my early reel customers and as it turns out, a neighbor, fished one of our local streams yesterday (Sunday). In fact, this is the stream that this reel model is named after – the Squannacook. Richard had a successful day and sent me two “family portraits” of his reel with a nice Rainbow and with the Prince Nymph he caught it on.

Dec 10, 09 at 1:33 amReely like your reels, hehe! The brass rocks! How is it weight-wise? I am using 6061-T6 aircraft tooling plate aluminum laser cut straight from my Rhino drawings..
Here is a shot of the reels that I am developing based on traditional Japanese family crests which are mainly in the round and centrally symmetrical with 5 – 7 spoke patterns. Although there are much more complicated ones that I have on the drawing board I did these first as prototytpes. Enjoy::

Dec 10, 09 at 1:39 amHey – I just “reel-ized” that it was your article that my brother-in-law gave me that inspired me to start making these reels. I would like them to be worthy of accomanying his very excellent hand made bamboo fly rods. Thanks so much for publishing your great article on how “reely” simple things can be so we can concentrate on some nice design alternatives without getting bogged down in the engineering. We’re having a “reel” ball!

Dec 10, 09 at 7:47 amRob, that is very cool! Thank you very much for posting these. In addition to the article, I have book on reelmaking that is near publication. I’ll be making posts when it is available. In the meantime, you should checkout the forum I started http://www.reelsmithing.com/forum There is lots more information there and photos of other folks’ reels. I would really love it if you posted your comments above and the photos on the Reel Showcase section of the forum!
cheers,
EG

Dec 10, 09 at 7:52 amI forgot to answer your question! No, they are not too heavy, I’ll post some weights later when I dig them out. For one thing, the spool hub is Delrin and that compensates for the brass. Also, the brass is relatively thin 0.032″. Finally, a bamboo rod really needs a slightly heavier reel to balance properly. These reels are just the ticket!
cheers,
