Cross Country Skiing in New Snow

My son Nick and I skied for about an hour in a park about 1/2 mile from our house. The 12″ of new snow we got last night and this morning made for some great conditions. Some of the trail was tracked but we found a bit of new powder here and there to keep it interesting.

GeoCaching on the Squanacook River

My sons, our dog Mia and I went GeoCaching for Cache GCGKTB. This cache was a 2 part multi-cache, meaning you first had to find the clue to get the coordinates to the actual cache. We could not find the coordinates at the original site but were successful at the alternative site. It took a little while to find it though!

Once we retrieved the N and W minutes, plugging them in to our Garmin 60CS was easy enough. Unfortunately, the day was very overcast and the Garmin had … Continue Reading

Another great hour on the Housatonic!

My wife and I were in Kent, Ct for parent-teacher meetings, a benefit auction, to watch a Girls Varsity soccer game, and to pick my daughter up for a 4 day weekend when I got the brilliant idea, “Hey, I can spend a little time on the Housatonic fishing for Browns!” So we got up on Saturday morning and headed to the river to a spot I have fished before. My wife sat on the rocks on the bank while I cast my fly. This was the first time she … Continue Reading

A little iPhone Photo Fun

My cousin-in-law celebrated her 50th birthday in Boston last week. She lives in San Francisco and is a flight attendant for United but she grew up in Massachusetts. She just happened to have a layover in Boston, so she invited family and friends on a sunset cruise of Boston Harbor. Normally. I would have brought at least 1 camera with me, but for some reason I left home with just my iPhone.

The Boston Harbor sunset cruises head out to the Boston Lighthouse – which is located on Little Brewster Island out on the harbor. Our boat … Continue Reading

Canoeing and Fishing on Upper Massapoag Pond

My son Nick and I took a little adventure on Upper Massapoag Pond in Dunstable. The put in was down a long steep hill at Jack’s Bridge on Pleasant Street. While we were prepping, I noticed a nice Brook Trout circling in the pool.

After launching, we were immediately confronted with lily pads. They were so thick that you could barely see the water. That coupled with a strong head wind made paddling a real chore. Our intent was to paddle to Lower Massapoag Pond – which is much larger and clear of lily pads.

A little vacation in Maine

We just got back from spending 5 days on Frye Island on Sebago Lake in Maine. We drove up on Monday morning and reached the ferry to the island by 1. It was rainy and overcast but we rode our bikes on the island to the tennis courts to play.

On Tuesday, the rain was really coming down so we decided to drive to Freeport to do some back-to-school shopping and to visit the LL Bean store(s).

On Wednesday, we decided to do some rock and mineral collecting. We took a short drive to Mount Apatite and … Continue Reading

Monday, August 13 to Friday, August 24, 2007

See the photo album here.

We left for Phoenix with Opa early Monday from Manchester, NH via Chicago Midway. The trip was uneventful – except that Chris Daughtry was on our flight in to Phoenix! Elizabeth got autographs for herself and Nick and John. We picked up our van to start the drive north to Page, AZ to start our vacation with 4 days of houseboating on Lake Powell. The temperature got up to 117 … Continue Reading

Backpacking in the Presidential Range

Nick, John, Mia and I did a 3 day, 20 mile backpack trip in the White Mountains.

Rocky Brook Trailhead

On day 1 we started at the Rocky Brook trailhead  and hiked in 5 miles to set up our base camp just as it started to pour down rain. Nick cut his finger preparing kindling for a campfire. We ended up eating stew prepared on our JetBoil – I cooked in the rain while the kids and … Continue Reading
