My reels do work!

Richard, one of my early reel customers and as it turns out, a neighbor, fished one of our local streams yesterday (Sunday). In fact, this is the stream that this reel model is named after – the Squannacook. Richard had a successful day and sent me two “family portraits” of his reel with a nice Rainbow and with the Prince Nymph he caught it on.

My article on reel making was published today

My second article in PowerFibers was a collaboration with Peter Dallman. It is our story on how we got started building reels and how I met Peter. It is in the newest issue but here is a copy of just the article: Its_Reely_Pretty_Easy_PowerFibers_Issue_37

This is good timing as my book “The Reelsmith’s Primer” is nearing completion!

The current issue can always be downloaded here: http://www.powerfibers.com/html/current_issue.html

Swift River Fly Fishing

On Saturday evening my friend David called to ask if I wanted to go fly fishing on Sunday morning. He didn’t have to ask twice! After a short conversation and a follow-up email and phone call, we made plans to meet at 5:15am and head to the Swift River of central MA. We had fished the Swift a few times before and found it to be challenging. The water there is crystal clear and ice cold. There are large Rainbow and Brown trout … Continue Reading

Mt Biking at Mine Falls

Had another good ride with my friends Chris, Walt and Tom last night. It was a coolish, dry evening – perfect riding weather. Did a little over 9 miles.

Great Brook Farm on a Mt Bike – take 2

Several weeks ago I reported on Mt Biking at Great Brook Farm (with the photo of Tom on his back in the mud – I still chuckle at that). Chris and his friend Chuck and I returned last night for some more exploration. We decided to try the Blueberry Hill trail on the west side of the park. I remembered it as being a nice, long not too technical uphill with a great descent. We then headed over to the Tophet Loop trail to ride the Esker again. No one fell off the bridges this time!

Mt Biking at Great Brook Farm

Had a great ride with Chris and Tom at Great Brook Farm State Park last night. The place has changed a lot since the last time I rode here. We got “lost” a couple of times. Tophet Loop and Heartbreak Ridge rock!

Tom took a close look at the mud under this bridge on Tophet Loop East.

Here’s the route we took in basically a clockwise direction.

Mt Biking Mine Falls

Chris, his friend Alex and I had a tame ride in Mine Falls this evening. It was a perfect evening to ride – cool, dry and no bugs! No casualties either. Afterwards, we headed to La Carreta in Nashua for dinner.

The Great Green River, Utah Expedition of 2007

After months of planning, scheming, planning some more, fly tying and rod building, the week of the Great Green River Expedition 2007 finally happened!

How It All Started

My fishing pal, Walker, moved to MA from New Mexico – where he fished the west with his friend Mike. Mike & Walker had fished the Green River in Utah several times and Mike was planning a get together to coincide with the end of the Blue Wing Olive hatch and the start of the … Continue Reading
