Every January, my sons’ Boy Scout troop goes cabin camping on the (frozen) lake at our Council’s camp. I posted about our ice fishing experiences back in January. I forgot that I had taken some video of another favorite activity at the Cabin Camp – potato canons! Also called Spud Guns, Spudzookas, and potato launchers – checkout this article on How Stuff Works for more details on how to build them and some theory of operation.

These canons can shoot a full size potato 100s of feet – we fire them out on to the frozen lake. This year, we shot a few at night and I caught them on video on my little Pentax W60 camera at 30fps. There was literally no light so the video (and photos) are grainy but the effect is interesting and capturing the blast in the canon was VERY interesting. Here is the sequence of 4 frames right at the time of launch:

(you can see the full size photos here)

In this sequence you can clearly see the initial ignition, then the blast up the barrel, and finally, the blast expelling the potato out of the canon. Keep in mind that the canon is made of thick, white PVC pipe! Since the camera shoots 30 frames/second and the blast occurs over 2-3 frames, the entire event is taking about 1/10 of a second!

Here is the video from which these stills were captured:

For the past month or so I have been busy converting a Micro Mark mini mill to CNC. I decided to take a staged approach and use as much of the original mill as possible. So, rather than using ball screws and nuts like a lot of folks do, I am using the stock X and Y axis screws – but I am modifying the nut by splitting it and adding 2 adjustment screws so I can take up the backlash.

Things are progressing nicely, I started with the Y axis. Here is a movie of it in operation for the first time.

On Saturday evening my friend David called to ask if I wanted to go fly fishing on Sunday morning. He didn’t have to ask twice! After a short conversation and a follow-up email and phone call, we made plans to meet at 5:15am and head to the Swift River of central MA. We had fished the Swift a few times before and found it to be challenging. The water there is crystal clear and ice cold. There are large Rainbow and Brown trout visible everywhere but they are highly educated to the ways of the fly fisherman! Some of the most wily trout I’ve ever encountered.

David picked my up at 5:20am and off we went. The sky was still dark and a light mist fell. By the time we got to the river, the sun was up. We had decided to fish the MA State Fish Hatchery section – called “The Pipe” rather than the famous (infamous?) “Y” Pool. We found the parking area, geared up and walked in. Several other fly fisherman were already in the water but a short hike downstream led to open water with quite a few large trout. We headed in to the water to begin our long dance with the trout. The sky cleared and the sun peeked out.

The fish were feisty! They were obviously sipping below the surface and occasionally jumped and cleared the water. None of the other fisherman were hooking anything but David hooked a trout shortly after we arrived – but it broke off. We tried drys – large and small, nymphs, midges and streamers. The fish just ignored everything we threw at them. After a little experimenting, I discovered that some of the fish got worked to a frenzy if I bobbed my “special fly” up and down as it neared the end of its drift. After a few hours I had hooked and lost 3 fish – including one that put up a great aerial display before breaking off. David hooked and lost 4. Only one of the other fisherman hooked a fish (and lost it) just as we were preparing to leave. It would have been fun to bring a Swift River Rainbow to hand but it was a great morning none the less. Shortly before we left, I took this underwater video of a large trout swimming.

I took my son Nick out for a couple of hours on the Nashua River last night. I also brought along my new Pentax Optio W60 waterproof 10 megapixel camera to try out. It replaces my Optio W30 that I’ve had for over a year. But this trip was more about paddling on a beautiful September evening than photography!

Here’s me heading out:

And a quick shot of Nick checking something out on shore:

Last week when we kayaked on the Squannacook River, we saw lots of beavers. Last night we saw (and heard) quite a few Great Blue Herons. Since the W60 also takes video, I recorded this clip of Nick trying to sneak up on a resting heron. You can hear him squawk as he flies away.

This weekend we took our first ever family backpacking trip! I planned for a moderate 5 mile trip in to the Pemigewasset Wilderness Area in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I helped everyone get packed on Friday and we all hit the sack for an early 2+ hour drive.

We managed to hit the road at 5:30am and headed for the hills. A quick stop for coffee and off we went. Nick, John and I have a favorite little breakfast place in Lincoln called Mr. W’s House of Pancakes.

Since this was our exit for the Kancamagus highway, it made perfect sense to pay another visit! One interesting thing about Mr. W’s – they have a safe built in to the wall with a booth right in front of it! The building used to be a bank. The breakfast was, once again, excellent and in short order, we were on our way.

The drive to Lincoln Woods Parking lot was short. We geared up at the van (make sure to buy a parking pass – or better yet, an annual pass) and were ready to hit the trail at 8: 45.
