Thanks Matt, I always use wet hands, go quickly and ONLY infrequently to take a photo. Otherwise I do as you suggest. But, I am a photographer and like to take a few fish photos! I know that I have caught the same fish more than once on some of the local rivers I fish often, so I am pretty sure they are not being harmed.

Oil absorption does not affect the length. The bark is glued to the rod blank and that prevents movement. Oil doesn’t typically cause wood to expand.

Does the bark absorbing oil add to the length of the finished grip at all? Or does it stay the same because it does not absorb all the way to the core?

Why must you handle those pretty fish at all? They are so small that it is likely you are removing much of the important mucous on their bodies. Just use barbless hooks and grab the hook and shake them off or use your forceps to gently remove the hook.

Thanks for the great article. As a new photographer and soccer dad of a 4 year old, these tips will prove most useful. Curious though. That type of Focus to you use? For Nikon, there is AF-S, AF-A, or AF-C. Hopefully you say the latter option.

Great trip report! Thanks for the info! I’m new this year to Tenkara and wanted to find a few good streams in northern MA to go try out…so far just some lakes near my home with no luck. Any thoughts?
