A little vacation in Maine

We just got back from spending 5 days on Frye Island on Sebago Lake in Maine. We drove up on Monday morning and reached the ferry to the island by 1. It was rainy and overcast but we rode our bikes on the island to the tennis courts to play.

On Tuesday, the rain was really coming down so we decided to drive to Freeport to do some back-to-school shopping and to visit the LL Bean store(s).

On Wednesday, we decided to do some rock and mineral collecting. We took a short drive to Mount Apatite and … Continue Reading

Porcupine!

I was coming home this evening right at dusk. As I approached my house, I spotted an animal on the side of the road. At first I thought it was a skunk but as I got closer, I saw that it was a porcupine! A big, fat porcupine. I stopped the car and rolled down the window so the kids could see. It was raining lightly but there was enough light for a good look. After a few seconds the critter turned and ambled back in to the woods.

Mt Biking at Great Brook Farm

Had a great ride with Chris and Tom at Great Brook Farm State Park last night. The place has changed a lot since the last time I rode here. We got “lost” a couple of times. Tophet Loop and Heartbreak Ridge rock!

Tom took a close look at the mud under this bridge on Tophet Loop East.

Here’s the route we took in basically a clockwise direction.

Mt Biking Mine Falls

Chris, his friend Alex and I had a tame ride in Mine Falls this evening. It was a perfect evening to ride – cool, dry and no bugs! No casualties either. Afterwards, we headed to La Carreta in Nashua for dinner.

Canoeing on the Squanacook River

Took Nick, John and my 6 y/o nephew William canoeing on the Squanacook River this morning. We spent most of the time tracking and catching turtles sunning themselves on logs. Caught 2! We saw several Great Blue Herons and a small Hummingbird Moth landing on Water Lilies out on the river.

Went Mt Biking with my friends Chris and Tom yesterday. It was more a fun ride. On the way back, Chris and Tom both got a nasty scrape; Chris from a tree that tried to lance him and Tom attempting a steep descent covered with scree. The scree won. Oh, and Chris also hit a hidden stump off trail and took a tumble. As for me, I just had a few small “fall over sideways from a complete stop” in to … Continue Reading

What do you have on your iPhone?

Following up from yesterday’s post on some of my favorite iPhone apps, here is the complete list of what I have on mine as of today. This list is constantly changing as I try new things and abandon apps that are less than useful.

Free Apps

  • AIM – instant messaging client for AOL and Apple’s iChat
  • AOL Radio – reviewed yesterday BoxOffice – find out what movies are playing and buy tickets
  • eBay Mobile – find, bid and buy stuff on eBay
  • Facebook – reviewed yesterday
  • Google Mobile App – Google desktop for the iPhone
  • NetNewsWire – an RSS reader for iPhone
  • Remote … Continue Reading

Some of my favorite iPhone apps

AOLicon.jpgLet me start with the AOL Radio app. This is a little gem and it is free too! Basically, it plays over 200 CBS owned radio stations from across the USA. The song’s title, artist and album artwork are displayed if available. You can browse by Stations, tag Favorites, look at Recent stations or songs and browse local based on your location. The interface is simple and easy to navigate. One of the coolest features is Find – which looks like a little magnifying glass next to the song’s album art. … Continue Reading

A little soccer photography fun

Here is a little fun digital photography post! I take a lot of youth soccer photos of my kids games, usually shooting ~500 photos per game. After editing, I typically end up with 50 or so good shots that I upload to my Zenfolio account (note: most of these photos are password protected since they are of kids). This spring, I got the idea to convert all the photos from a single game in to a time lapse movie. Here is the result of my first attempt. Only minor editing (color correction) was done to the 506 photos … Continue Reading

iPhone activated

If you read my post yesterday, you know the story. The Apple store had to send me to the AT&T store this morning. My account was completely messed up. The gent at AT&T got things sorted and working in 10 minutes. Thanks Dennis at AT&T in the Burlington Mall!
