Installing a Scotty Fly Rod Holder on my Kayak

It’s crazy! After buying a new kayak for 100s of $$, most kayak fishermen start drilling holes in them to add various accessories. It is a bit intimidating approaching your new toy with a 1-3/8″ hole cutting saw, but sometimes it just has to be done.

You might first ask, “what is a fly rod holder?” Well, it is exactly that, a device that holds your fly rod while you are paddling out to where you want to fish. Rods tossed on the floor of a kayak … Continue Reading

A little iPhone Photo Fun

My cousin-in-law celebrated her 50th birthday in Boston last week. She lives in San Francisco and is a flight attendant for United but she grew up in Massachusetts. She just happened to have a layover in Boston, so she invited family and friends on a sunset cruise of Boston Harbor. Normally. I would have brought at least 1 camera with me, but for some reason I left home with just my iPhone.

The Boston Harbor sunset cruises head out to the Boston Lighthouse – which is located on Little Brewster Island out on the harbor. Our boat … Continue Reading

Practical Guide for Youth Soccer Photography – Part A

Well, our fall soccer season kicked up this Labor Day weekend. Both my sons play for FC Stars of Massachusetts soccer club and we host an annual tournament. Since I spend a lot of time on soccer fields and happen to love photography, I got smart a few years ago and combined the two! Now, you’ll usually find me on the corners of the field shooting the game. Photographing games keeps me out of trouble from being one of … Continue Reading

“The Art of Ware”

One of my favorite tech books – “The Art of Ware” – is available as a free PDF here. I don’t have time to post my thoughts on this book right now but I will soon. I wanted to get this out now for the benefit of my readers.

Musings on the history of Social Computing

One of my interests and responsibilities as a member of EMC’s Content Management and Archiving (CMA) Group’s CTO Office is “Social Computing“. It occurred to me that I have watched and participated in this area from its very earliest – at least from the perspective of an average technically-inclined citizen. As I thought about my experiences and related them to the current surge in Social Computing, I thought it might be interesting to capture a little history from my perspective.

Back in “the day” we dialed in to on-line communities called … Continue Reading

Kayaking the Nashua River

I just bought a Native Watercraft Manta Ray 12 on Wednesday and finally got on the Nashua River tonight for 2 hrs. The Nashua is a wide river with a decent flow, no white water. I launched at the canoe/kayak put-in by the Rt 119 bridge in Groton.

I have not rigged the yak for fishing yet, I want to get used to it and try it “raw” before starting to … Continue Reading

Mt Biking at Mine Falls

Had another good ride with my friends Chris, Walt and Tom last night. It was a coolish, dry evening – perfect riding weather. Did a little over 9 miles.

Great Brook Farm on a Mt Bike – take 2

Several weeks ago I reported on Mt Biking at Great Brook Farm (with the photo of Tom on his back in the mud – I still chuckle at that). Chris and his friend Chuck and I returned last night for some more exploration. We decided to try the Blueberry Hill trail on the west side of the park. I remembered it as being a nice, long not too technical uphill with a great descent. We then headed over to the Tophet Loop trail to ride the Esker again. No one fell off the bridges this time!

Canoeing and Fishing on Upper Massapoag Pond

My son Nick and I took a little adventure on Upper Massapoag Pond in Dunstable. The put in was down a long steep hill at Jack’s Bridge on Pleasant Street. While we were prepping, I noticed a nice Brook Trout circling in the pool.

After launching, we were immediately confronted with lily pads. They were so thick that you could barely see the water. That coupled with a strong head wind made paddling a real chore. Our intent was to paddle to Lower Massapoag Pond – which is much larger and clear of lily pads.

A little vacation in Maine

We just got back from spending 5 days on Frye Island on Sebago Lake in Maine. We drove up on Monday morning and reached the ferry to the island by 1. It was rainy and overcast but we rode our bikes on the island to the tennis courts to play.

On Tuesday, the rain was really coming down so we decided to drive to Freeport to do some back-to-school shopping and to visit the LL Bean store(s).

On Wednesday, we decided to do some rock and mineral collecting. We took a short drive to Mount Apatite and … Continue Reading
